While most conductors are made from a base of copper wiring, we can customize them with alloys or rare metals for better compatibility. Your equipment will determine the best option for the metal that is used for your cables. Adding a rare metal to your cable conductor can improve capacity and optimize performance. 

At Meridian, we custom extrude our conductors down to the millimeter. Doing this in-house allows us to create ultra-precise conductor sizes for custom cable assemblies and wire harnesses. The intended function and your equipment will determine the appropriate conductor size you will need. Shielding

As its name suggests, shielding is an additional layer of protection for your cable. Shielding is a thin layer of a metallic material within the cable that deflects electromagnetic interference (EMI). If you operate in an electronically noisy area, like a server room or tech booth, EMI can seriously threaten data as it travels through the cable. Shielding helps prevent data from being corrupted or wholly destroyed. 

A few different types of shielding can be added to a cable assembly. Though each class has the same primary purpose, the various designs offer unique properties. 

Some of the options you have for shielding include:

  • Foil shielding: Foil shielding is a single thin strip of aluminum spiraled around the inner parts of the cable. This method completely covers the conductor, filling, and insulator. While it provides the most thorough protection, it makes the cable less flexible.

     

  • Braided shielding: Braided shielding is made by weaving multiple tiny metal strips together. This method creates a cylindrical braid of protection around the inner cable components. While this method provides more flexibility, it does not cover the conductor entirely. Braided shielding does not provide the thorough protection that you have with foil shielding.

     

  • Combination shielding: This method combines the best of both shielding options, which gives you flexibility and total coverage.
